Emil Wakim, who joined the iconic Saturday Night Live cast for its milestone 50th season, is leaving the legendary sketch-comedy series after just one year. The 27-year-old comedian confirmed his exit on Instagram, describing the experience as “the most terrifying, thrilling, and rewarding” of his life.

Wakim broke the news to fans with a heartfelt message, calling the decision “a gut punch of a call to get” but expressing gratitude for his time on the legendary NBC show. “Every time I scanned into the building I would think how insane it is to get to work there,” he shared. “I will miss it dearly and all the brilliant people that made it feel like home.”

He also thanked SNL creator Lorne Michaels for “taking a chance” on him. “I was so lucky to bring some of myself in there and say things I believed in, and I’m excited for whatever chapter comes next,” Wakim wrote, signaling his eagerness for future creative projects.

Wakim joined SNL as one of three new cast members for season 50, alongside Ashley Padilla and Jane Wickline. He debuted in the premiere hosted by Jean Smart and wrapped up his run in the finale with Scarlett Johansson. Throughout the season, Wakim was a frequent face during the show’s iconic “Weekend Update” segments, often bringing a unique voice to the stage.

His departure comes just as SNL prepares for major cast changes in season 51, set to premiere on October 4. The announcement follows the recent exit of fellow cast member Devon Walker, highlighting a period of transition for the show.
